Skincare Myths Debunked - Best Skincare TIps - Marie Claire

Are you approaching your regimen all wrong? Dermatologists expose common blunders that could be sabotaging your complexion.
By Ning Chao (Via Marie Claire)

MYTH 1: A complete skincare routine must have three steps.

TRUTH:Cleanse, tone, then moisturize has been drilled into our heads, but feel free to skip the second step, says Cambridge, Massachusetts, dermatologist Dr. Ranella Hirsch
: "People think that toning an oily complexion will make it better, but oil is protective and the body produces it in response to injury. When you strip your skin, it reacts by making a ton of grease."

MYTH 2: You need to cleanse your face at least twice a day.

TRUTH: Using a face wash in the morning is just an excuse to go through more product, according to Hirsch, who advises avoiding antibacterial soaps at all costs because they're too harsh for your face. "In the morning, the best thing is water and your fingers, not a cleanser," she says.

MYTH 3: Scrubs make skin glow.

TRUTH: Overexfoliating leads to extra oil production, so the glow you see the first week will eventually turn into a greasy mess. "Skin is actually a good exfoliator on its own, so I rarely recommend manual scrubs," says Hirsch

Breast Augmentation Cost

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the price for breast implants differs depending on the implant type. The average fees for saline implants fluctuate from $3300 to $3500, and for silicone implants from $4000-$4100.

However, the actual breast augmentation surgery cost and implant prices are not represented by these figures, since the fees highly vary from region to region.

Although the average cost for breast augmentation surgery is between $3,000 and 4,000, the full amount that the patient could pay is much higher. This figure includes only the cost of the breast implants, but there are other fees as well; these includes the anesthesia, medical facility fee, prescriptions, medical testing, surgical garments, or any other charges for pre- and post-surgical care. It is also important to keep in mind that not only do surgical fees fluctuate from region to region, but also from practice to practice. Surgical facilities, cosmetic surgeons, and anesthesiologists will probably charge more for their services in larger cities. Overall, understand that every breast enhancement procedure is unique and there are a variety of factors that will influence the cost, ranging from the type of implant to the way it is placed and the level of surgical complexity.

If you are considering breast augmentation, first ask your breast surgeon what fees will be covered. Although the cost of breast augmentation is not and should not be the decisive factor in choosing a cosmetic surgeon, it is important to be aware of the procedure cost to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Generally, insurance companies do not cover the breast implant costs or any other prices associated with the surgery. An exception is made when the breast augmentation surgery is part of a breast reconstruction procedure, e.g. as a result of mastectomy or breast trauma. Furthermore, many insurance companies will not even cover surgery or treatment costs for complications that are related to breast implants.

Now that you understand some of the various factors affecting the price of your surgery, you can look into this option as a more informed individual. Again, though price should not be a defining factor in your decision, it is important to understand what to expect financially. Reasons for Breast Implant Rupture and Deflation

Breast implant deflation or rupture is one of the top reasons why women undergo a breast revision surgery or a secondary breast augmentation surgery. The reasons why a breast implant may deflate or rupture include aging of the implants, damages to the implants by surgical tools, biopsies, fluid drainage, and other procedures to the breast. Breast implants can also rupture because of an accident, excessive compression during a mammogram, or overfilling/underfilling the implant with saline solution.

Typically, the lifetime of a breast implant is between 10 and 20 years, although they may last longer.

Saline-filled breast implant deflation can occur either suddenly or slowly over some period of time and will result in a noticeable decrease in size or change of shape of the breast.

Ruptured silicone implants may result in a slight loss of volume over time. A silicone rupture often goes undetected, for this reason, many doctors recommend having an MRI 3 years after your surgery, and then another MRI every 2 years to detect the presence of any leak.

The fact is that there is no surefire way to prevent breast implant deflation or rupture, but you may reduce the risk of it if you follow our advice.

1. Talk to your breast surgeon about his/her surgical plan to avoid surgical practices that increase the risk of deflation or rupture, e.g. overfilling or underfilling of the implant.

2. Avoid dangerous sports or other activities that carry a high risk of physical trauma to the chest area.

3. If you should get a mammogram, tell your technician beforehand that you have implants. Specify whether they are saline or silicone.

4. If you have silicone implants, it is obligatory to have an MRI every 2 to 3 years.

How Old Should You be for Breast Augmentation Surgery?

There are a few federal laws that regulate the minimum required age for having breast augmentation surgery. Minors cannot get a breast enhancement surgery unless the procedure is done for reconstructive purposes.

In 2000, a new regulation was adopted according to which no person under the age of 18 may have a breast augmentation surgery except for the some special cases when the surgery is required form the reconstructive point of view. In 2006, the federal government passed another regulation that proposed further amendments. This new regulation stated that no person under the age of 22 was allowed to opt for silicone implants for breast augmentation. What does it mean? It means that if you are between the ages of 18 and 22 and are eager to undergo a breast augmentation you are only allowed to get saline-filled breast implants as there are no known risks of a saline filled implant rupture whereas the silicone filled implants are still being investigated.

The new regulation was based on the belief that a woman’s breast is still in the process of forming at that age and that a young lady is not mature enough mentally to make a sound decision regarding the procedure. She may be influenced by mass media and become a victim of so called “beauty standards”. This is why the federal government has disallowed teenagers under the age of 18 to undergo a breast augmentation.

It is important to always discuss all the possible risks associated with young adult breast augmentation with your LA cosmetic surgeon even if you have reached the age of 22.

Augmentation Rhinoplasty and Nose Implants

Augmentation rhinoplasty, also referred to as nose lift, is nasal surgery aimed to increase the shape of the nose. This type of rhinoplasty is performed on patients of all ethnicities, though most of the patients who undergo augmentation rhinoplasty are non-Caucasian.

Augmentation rhinoplasty may boost the patient’s self-confidence and self esteem, since the nose occupies the most prominent central area on the face, greatly determining whether the face will be considered attractive or not. A higher nose bridge makes a big difference in the overall facial balance and appearance.
Augmentation rhinoplasty is sometimes deceptively conceived as a simple operation. But this is a common misconception, since placing an implant to increase the bridge of the nose is really a serious surgical interference and requires broad experience and board certification.

Any well trained and board certified rhinoplasty surgeon will explain that rhinoplasty itself is one of the most delicate cosmetic surgeries. The rhinoplasty surgeon should be able to evaluate the structure of your nasal bones and cartilage, your facial shape, your skin and your age since these are the key factors that influence his decisions on what technique is the best option for your particular case.

Augmentation rhinoplasty often makes use of grafts or implants to achieve the required changes. A graft is a medical term used to describe the material taken from your own body and transferred to another location of it. In the most cases surgeons use cartilage grafts (septal grafts) taken from inside your nose.

Sometimes the amount of material required for the desirable results is greater than the available amount of grafting material. In such cases surgeons opt for implants which are synthetic materials designed to be used in the nose. There are several implants available in the market for augmentation rhinoplasty, the most common ones are polytetrafluoroethylene (Gore-Tex), Silicone, and porous polyethylene (MedPor).
